How to fix a sagging blind, step by step

One of the most frequent faults in a home is when a shutter breaks or hangs down. Having to call a technician every time this happens can be a great waste of time, as well as a high cost. That's why we're going to show you step by step everything you need to do to fix a sagging shutter.

Parts of a roller shutter

The passage of time and a bad maintenance of roller shutters can cause them to break on several occasions. If this happens, before starting to fix a sagging shutter, it is essential to know what are its parts.

Tape from an unfastened blind

External elements of a roller shutter

Here we show you which are the external elements you can find a blind:

  • Lamashorizontal pieces that make up a roller shutter. They can be made of PVCwood or aluminium.
  • Side guidesThe slats are responsible for raising and lowering the blind. They also prevent the slats from rubbing against the window.
  • Tape: rope that is pulled to raise and lower the slats.
  • Dustpanlocated at the end of the belt, although it can be installed inside the wall, it has the function of hiding the belt and storing it.
  • DrawerThe space, usually located at the top of the window, whose function is to store the roller shutter mechanism.

Drawer parts

As we have said, the box is the element in charge of storing the mechanism of a roller shutter; in inside we can find:

  • Axis: horizontal piece on which the roller shutter is wound.
  • Bumpers or buffersThe shaft ends: they are located at the ends of the shaft and have the function of ensuring the operation of the shaft.
  • Pulley: circular mechanism on which the roller shutter belt is wound, making movement possible.
  • BracesThe function is to keep the sheets anchored in the drawer.

Steps to fix a sagging blind

Once you know all its parts, you should know that an unfastened blind can usually be due to a failure of the tie rods or a problem with the belt.

Tie rod failure

Here we give you the steps to follow to find out how to fix a blind that has come down:

  1. Dismantle the drawer.
  2. Pull down the shutterThis way you will be able to access the damaged braces.
  3. Replace broken partsThe installation is only possible in one position, so you will have no problem installing the new braces.
  4. Roll up the blind slowly.

Damaged or broken tape

If, on the other hand, the failure was in the tape the steps you need to follow are:

  1. Dismantle the drawer and loosen the straps.
  2. Disassemble the shaft and separate the belt from the pulley.
  3. Dismantle the dustpan and replace the belt.
  4. Hook the belt to the pulley.
  5. Fix the other end of the tape to the dustpan. It is best to measure the space from the support to the base of the drawer and multiply it by three.
  6. Reattach the dustpan to the wall.
  7. Close the drawer.
