Would you like to know how blinds are made? On our blog, we offer several tutorials (fitting a blind in a roller shutter box, convert normal roller shutter to automaticetc.) and this is one of them. Take note, prepare your materials, and get to work!

How roller shutters are made

If you want to make your own roller shutter from 0, it is possible. To do this, you need: curtain fabric, wooden boards, blind rail, hoops, ruler, flexible lead tape, Velcro, glue, pins, thick cotton cord and tailor's chalk.

Step 1

Start measuring the window where you want to install the roller shutter. To position it outside the frame, calculate the length and width. To these figures, add 15 centimetres on each side.

Step 2

Cut the fabric Add another 4 centimetres to the sides and another 15 centimetres for the top and the bottom. WARNING! When marking the measurements, place the fabric on a flat surface and draw with chalk on the back.

Step 3

Later, sew the hems on the sides:

  • Fold 2 centimetres inwards and iron.
  • Fold another 2 more on the wrong side of the fabric and iron again.

Step 4

At this point, pin what you have marked and folded. Sew with a straight stitch all over the fold.

Step 5

To sew the hemagain fold over 2 centimetres of fabric. Repeat, but this time with 10 centimetres. Iron and fix. Sew, leaving 1 centimetre from the top edge of the hem.

Step 6

It continues with thin planks of wood, which must be attach with sewn-on Velcro. On its sides, stick the hard part of it. This will make the blind roll up when you open it.

Step 7

Measure the length of the curtain to lay the wood evenly. Mark where each board goes. When you reach the bottom edge, put on the folded area some flexible lead tape. From the lead tape mark, leave 5 centimetres and mark. This is where the last wooden board will go. At each mark, sew the soft part of the Velcro. You can now glue the planks together.

Step 8

Now measure the width, to divide the curtain into 2 or 3 parts. First of all, leave 5 centimetres on each side. At the marks, put a plastic ring. It will be glued to one of the wooden planks.

Step 9

Insert the curtain into the blind trackto fix it to the wall. Thread a cotton string through each row of hoops. Tie it at the end.

Step 10

Finally you can put your roller shutter to the test! Check that it rolls up and unrolls correctly. If so, you will have succeeded in your task.

We also teach you how to make a blind.

How blinds are made from an existing one

However, you can also take advantage of an existing blind (whether old or newly purchased, such as those in our catalogue of PVC shutters) to create a new one to your liking. If you are more interested in this option, follow these steps:

Step 1

Get some blinds that measure as much as the ones you want to make. This allows you to make use of the top rail, which is attached to the wall by means of screw brackets.

Step 2

Lay the blind face up on a flat surface. Glue the front of the rail to the back of the fabric. The two sides of the vehicle must be aligned.

Step 3

Turn the blind over (carefully and pressing down on the fabric), to find the cords that hold the boards. On the back, find 2 different kinds of cords. The one you need is a thinner one, with tiny connectors that run along each board

Step 4

Cut the thin cord from each of the boards. Make sure you release them all and remove the string when you are done. The thick cord, which runs lengthwise, is the pull cord and should not be cut.

Step 5

Pull out the lower bar covers to remove the lower bar.. The pull cord is attached to it, so untie it. With this step, the blinds will no longer be held in place.

Step 6

Remove enough slats and separate the remaining slats evenly. They will roll up nicely later on. Place the first one 25 cm above the lower edge of the fabric.

Step 7

Adhere the slats to the fabric with glue.. Start with the top board and put it on one edge while applying the adhesive (avoid the pull cords, because if you stick them on, the blind will not roll up). Repeat this step with the other boards. Press down to make sure they don't move.

Step 8

Now place again the bar is lowered into place. Don't forget to tie the pull ropes to their lids, so that they don't come off.

Step 9

At this point, glue the fabric to the bottom bar to finish the blinds. Lay the rod on its side so that the hem does not unravel. Wait for the glue to dry before continuing.

Step 10

Hang the top rail on the wall using mounting brackets.. Put these over the window. For more stability, screw them to the beams on the wall.
