Changing the ribbon of a roller shutter with external box

The shutters are one of the most common elements in the home. Precisely because they are so widely used, their tapes end up spoiling. That's when we ask ourselves the question: how do we change the tape of our roller shutter with external box?

Tools for changing the roller shutter belt

When it comes to changing the belt of our roller shutter, we mainly need three tools:

• New roller shutter tape
• Screwdriver (in case we need it to remove the cover)
• Scissors

How long does the blind tape have to be?

When you have to replace the belt of a roller shutter, you need to know what length you need to ensure the correct functioning of the mechanism. There are different ways of calculating this measure:

• Measure the old tape and use the same length for the new one.
• Measure the distance from the rope in the drawer to the dustpan and multiply by 4.
• Measure the height of the window, you will need a strap two and a half to three times bigger.

It's easy to change the roller shutter ribbon

As you can see, by following a few simple steps, in just a few minutes you will have your new roller shutter tape installed and ready to use.

Step one: lower the blind

The first thing you need to do before you start is to lower the shutter completely so that it is supported.

Step two: remove the old tape

To gain access to the tape, remove the cover of the roller shutter drawer, taking care not to damage it. Then proceed to unscrew the metal straps that you will find attached to the drum.

Once you have done so, remove the tape from which it is wound, the so-called "plate". This is the part that allows it to be raised and lowered. To remove the belt, you will have to pull it downwards to get it to unscrew and release it definitively from the disc to which it is attached. 

Later, cut or untie the final knot of the tape. 

The next thing you need to do is unscrew of the wall the box where the belt catcher is located and carefully pull it out. Remember to remove the screw which fixes the belt to the picker.

Step three: install the new tape

To install the new roller shutter tape, the first thing you need to do is to pass it through the bodkinThe plate is then placed in the hole of the plate and knotted to prevent it from coming loose.

You will then have to roll it up on the plate at the same time as you turn the drum. Next, screw the metal braces on the drum to fix it in place and fixed the tape to the dustpan. Don't forget to make sure it is tight, otherwise it won't work properly.

Now screw the dustpan box back to the wall and check that it is working properly.

Step four: closing the box

Close the box and everything will be as it was before! 

What if we live in a flat and can't get to the drawer?

Step one: raise the blind

The first thing you need to do before you start, is to remove the buffers of the blind. Then use a cord and insert it through the hole in the stops. Raise the shutter until it is all the way to the top, until it slides completely into the groove.

Step two: cut the old tape and splice the new one.

Go to the top slot and cut the old strap. Don't forget to leave a margin of about four fingers. Next, burn the ends of both straps and proceed to weld them together with a lighter. Wait for the softened nylon to dry and then cut off the excess parts.

Step three: let the new rope go in

It now proceeds to the introduction of the new rope in the upper groove. To do this, play with the cord that you have previously installed in the blind. As you pull on it, the blind is lowered and the new cord is fed through the slot. 

Step four: Change the belt in the dustpan box

Let the roller shutter unroll completely and proceed to the installation of the new strap in the lower part. The first thing you will need to do is to cut the new rope, counting about 40 cm from the height of the dustpan box.

Proceed to open the dustpan box, carefully. Once disassembled, pull the rope until the spring is taut and cut the old strap. Then, lay the new belt straight and weld at the lower end. 

The only thing left to do is to follow the rope as it turns, until it is slightly taut. Switch back to normal operation and ¡readyYou now have your new ribbon installed!
