Fitting a blind in a roller shutter box: 6 steps to success

The translucent roller blinds (or other types) can be mounted on the ceiling as well as on the wall. A priori, it is always better to mount the blind on the wall. However, if the blind box protrudes, it will have to be mounted on the ceiling, unless you have a plaster moulding in the same shape as the blind box. Sounds like a problem, doesn't it? Well, let's solve it, by telling you how to fit a blind in a roller blind box.

What problems does the blind box cause when fitting a blind?

Often, the venetian blinds or blinds can be installed either on the wall or on the ceiling. However, depending on the type of home you live in, this can be an impossible task.

If your house is very old, the blind box is probably not flush with the window and therefore protrudes more or less. This makes it even more difficult to fit the blind into the blind box to make it more aesthetically pleasing.

If the ceiling is not in the best condition to hold the blind or if the ceiling has a plaster moulding similar to the projection of the box, we recommend that you continue reading to find a solution.

Preliminary notes

At first, we thought of buying fabric roller blinds that can be cut to size, to be placed on the ceiling in the box formed by the plaster moulding. However, instead of doing that, we recommend a quicker and more effective solution: attach a self-made wall extension. However, you can also buy wall extensions on the market to save the roller shutter drawer. In case you want to save yourself that part of the work.

How to install a roller blind?

The steps to make our wall extensions are quite easy, and the material to be used is easy to find. The only thing you need is a little patience in the first steps. After that, it's a piece of cake.

Materials

The materials you will need to assemble 2 blinds are:

  • 4 flat brackets.
  • 8 bolts and 8 nuts.
  • 1 drill with drill bit for iron.

Optionally, you can use a radial saw to cut the part of the square that faces the wall, to achieve a "less coarse" result. Although it is not essential.

Process

That said, we can finally get down to fitting a blind in a roller shutter box. Here are the steps to follow:

Step 1

To begin with, place the blind bracket on the bracketMark where you need the holes so that you can screw it to the ceiling (note that the bracket is the ceiling) and drill.

Step 2

Next, cuts off one third of the square that goes to the wall, making the bracket smaller. Although, as we said before, you can skip this step if you wish. It serves more aesthetic than practical reasons.

Step 3

Then, fix the blind brackets to the bracket by means of nuts and bolts. Note that the screws will protrude from the top. Therefore, use short screws so that they protrude as little as possible.

Step 4

As soon as the brackets are anchored to the brackets, put these on the wallThe size of the blind box should be set to the size of your choice (as a rule of thumb, 6 cm above the window). First, mark the centre of the blind box. Then, place the two central brackets tightly together, using the screws and plugs supplied with the blind itself (don't forget that the blind brackets are not identical on both sides, so make sure that the ones that are wheel brackets and do not include the chain are in the centre).

Step 5

Once you have the two centre brackets, mount the blinds and mark the points of the angle brackets on the sides, using a spirit level and fastening to the wall.

Step 6

Et voilà! At this point, all that remains is place the bar of the fabric roller blind and enjoy a job well done.

We promise you that you won't notice a thing, the blinds will look perfect, as if they were hung directly in front of you. The only thing that is a little noticeable is in the centre. But nothing that can't be fixed by painting the screws, so they will be concealed.

By the way, do you know how to make a blind step by step?
