Types of roller shutter catchers
In the majority of households in our country, we can find shutters with louvres, whatever the room in the house, from the kitchen to the bedrooms. However, most people are not familiar with the elements that make up a roller shutter and what they are actually used for. As well as not knowing the types of roller shutter catchers that exist.
The roller shutter catcher can be of various types, but in general it is a component that has a braking system.
This system consists only of a metal part that presses down on the tape and prevents the roller shutter from lowering under the weight of the roller shutter.
Roller shutter catchers
The roller blinds are widely used thanks to the protection they provide from the sun and sound, as well as the extra security they provide from the outside. Although until very recently they were only used in Spanish homes, they are gradually spreading to other parts of the world. We talk about them because they are the most common and we can control them in 2 ways:
- Picker with strap. It is manual, cheaper and ideal for places where there is no electrical outlet nearby.
- Roller shutter motor. In this case, no dustpan or belt is required, but they are more expensive and require the installation of an electric motor.
Parts of a roller shutter
The pick-up mechanism or system for the roller shutter is an indispensable element for the correct operation of the roller shutter. This device has a tension spring The roller shutters are available in flush-mounted (embedded in the wall) or surface-mounted (anchored to the wall) versions.
Now that you know this, it is convenient to know that, for its correct and efficient operation, it has to work with other components such as:
- The tape guide. It is the part that contains the belt from the pick-up to the pulley.
- The tape. It helps us to raise and lower the shutter.
We cannot forget the rest of the elements located inside the drawer and which communicate with the dustpan by means of the belt. Remember that the drawer is located above the window. The elements inside the drawer are:
- Mats. 2 small pieces located at the ends of the shaft to contain it.
- Braces. Metal parts used to fix the first slat to the roller shutter shaft.
- Axis. Metal tube on which the roller shutter is wound.
- Pulley. It is a round piece that collects the belt when the blind is lowered or raised (it can be made of metal or PVC).
Knowing all this already, you will know that, in the event of a breakdownIf you have a fault, you will be able to assess where the breakage or failure is and whether or not you can fix it.

The belt width is the element to be taken into account when we want to replacing a broken or damaged belt of our current dustpan. It is important to choose the ideal one, otherwise the tape will be useless as it will not be able to be adjusted to the dustpan.
Normally, when replacing the dustpan, you should always replace the dustpan with a new one. with one of the same type as they are not easy to change as they are recessed (flush-mounted) or external (surface-mounted).
As choosing a dustpan can be a bit tricky and complicated, we give you the tip to do it according to the width of the belt. You can find the measurements on the market:
14 mm dustpan
This type of dustpan is often referred to as a "mini dustpan" and can be seen in small blinds.
18 mm dustpan
They are the most common ones we can see in many households as they are considered to be the standard size.
20 mm dustpan
Similar to the previous ones, except that the tape is 20 mm wide, mainly used in pickers which have to contain the tape for larger and heavier blinds.
And so much for the types of collectors. As you can see, it is quite a wide section and you probably didn't know some of the information we have given you. Now that you know everything you need to know, you will be able to deal with any change or repair of your roller shutters.
